DESIGN SKILLS. BRIEF 1. FINAL PIECES.

I finished my final pieces for todays crit. In general I think I for-filled the aim of the brief. 

I arranged them in three groups. 

Group A: Definition of condense

 *making something more concise/compact

 1. I particularly like this one. The left side of the 'M' letter is not compact. But the right side is condense, more compact than the left. I did the line drawing because I thought of a picture I've seen before; a table of condensed molecules. 

2. I did this with black pen and a ruler. The same concept as the one before. Fading into a compact 'M' left side drawing.  

3. I used arrows that show resizing. Cropping. It kind of crosses through resizing and making something more compact. Anyways it's the same condense. 

Group B: Definition of condense:

*Removing water

*making something to a liquid

 4.This one is my favourite.  I spend quit a while drawing.  I found the definition of condense could be making something to a liquid or  removing water out of it. And that's exactly  what I tried to visualise. Once again I don't really know why I chose line drawing, maybe it's because I knew how to make it seem as a liquid through lines. At the same time still making it look quit physical.

5. I thought of concepts  when You try to drain the water out of something. And as a flick I remembered my childhood memories, when my mum used to drain clothing to make it dryer. So i used the motion of drain clothing in order to visualise condense as removing water. 

6. There also was a definition os condense   that said it could be gas becoming into liquid. I couldn't think of how to draw gas,So I left an opening. Because gas is not something You can actually see. I used dots and created liquid out of them. 

Group C: Definition of condense

*being reduced in size

*increasing the density  

 7. Tried to show the eternity in being condensed. You can condense something or in other words reduce in size as small as You can think. Even  thinking os micro molecule that we can't even see. As big as You think, as small as it gets.

8. I tried different techniques. Paper cut was one of it. It's actually quit hard cutting paper. It even gets more difficult when You go to details. But the result is really nice. Because You can actually feel the paper cut outs. 

9. A pretty simple consept. reducing in size. You can see the small and the large version of the font. The small one is a part of the larger one. Ant the lines of the larger 'M' direct to the smaller 'M'.  

10. This is one of my favourites. Its simple, clean and clear. 

I think in order to forward this brief I would pick one (probably the 1st) of the fonts and make the whole alphabet of them. Might even make it to my own condense type.

DESIGN SKILLS. BRIEF 1. DESIGN SHEETS.

These are few ideas that I may use for my final piece. I already produced few of the cards that I'm quite happy. Though working by hand is really hard. You need to measure  everything in order for it to be in place. Have to try not to mess the empty space up. It's really hard to keep it professional and neat. I like being tidy so it's  a headache if I mess it up.  

My word was condense. I chosen the letter 'M'. I really enjoyed doing the brief, because it's quit fun to work with tools and hand-drawn or cut or trace things.  But I had difficulties with my word. CONDENSE. I found it hard to visualise or relate to. I came up with few solutions to interpretation: 

• Condense  as removing water
• Condense as reducing in size
• Condense as making it more concise  
• Condens as changing smith to a liquid 
• Condense as making smith to become more compact

We went to the city centre yesterday and took some pictures of:

• people flagging a taxi
• being sick (that you shouldn't)
• laying around on the ground 
• a taxi driver (thumbs up)

I also tried to do some pictures for the card. I used photoshop cutouts.

And I tried to fold out paper into a car. I succeeded but it wouldn't be the best layout for the card. It's a bit too complicated. We are trying to design something fun, but simple to use while your drunk and trying to go back after a night out.

It looks really fun and vintage, we are still thinking to change the front and put few more pictures on. We're still working with the front cover of the card. 

Summer Brief (alphabet)

Today we had our summer brief presentation. We discussed the work among our blog group. We agreed that:

1. Most of them are digital

2. Most of them have white backgrounds

3. Most are themed

4. Mostly capitals

5. They all are 10x10

6. Range of ideas

7. Most of them are colourful

8. They all work as a set

9. All hand drawn for a start

10. All legible

Based on the research I did during the summer and on the answers of the project briefs  questions my alphabet became a “Circus”.

A circus is commonly a travelling company of performers that may include acrobats, clowns, trained animals, trapeze acts, musicians, hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, unicyclists and other stunt-oriented artists. The word also describes the performance that they give, which is usually a series of acts that are choreographed to music and introduced by a "ringmaster".A traditional circus performance is normally held in a ring.

My interpretation of the text:

My life like a circus is a journey in which I include my friends, my dislikes, my way of life, my fears, my loves, the courage I have, fragility of things and everything along the way. The word also describes the inside and outside worlds which usually interact.  I feel as I was a ringmaster in my own circle of life.  

 I chose the colours while thinking of my favorite Walt Disney character Dumbo (The circus elephant)
